Budgeting Loan
If you don’t qualify for a Funeral Payment
or it does not cover the full costs of
the funeral, you may be entitled to a
udgeting Loan. hese are interestfree loans of between £100 and £1,500
which are repaid out of your benefits.

Funeral Payment
You may be able to get a grant to cover
the costs of a simple, respectful funeral
from the ocial und, but there are
strict rules about who can get help and
how much. uneral Payment will have
to be paid back from the deceased
person’s estate (if there is one).

War pensions
If your late spouse or civil partner
served in the armed forces you
may be entitled to help.

Benevolent funds and charities
Help is sometimes available
from benevolent funds linked
to a spouse’s, civil partner’s or
your own past employment.

Bereavement Allowance
You can claim ereavement llowance
if your spouse or civil partner paid I
contributions and you were under tate
Pension age when they died. he amount
you get depends on your age and your
partner’s I contribution and it is taxable.

Bereavement payment
You may be entitled to a tax-free lump
sum bereavement payment of £2,000, but
only if your spouse or civil partner paid I
contributions and either you were under
tate Pension age when they died or if
they were not entitled to a ategory
tate Pension when they died. If you have
dependent children, you may also be
entitled to Widowed Parent’s llowance.

State Pension
There are different rules for widows,
widowers and surviving civil partners.
• If you’re a widow who is over tate
Pension age and not receiving a
full basic tate Pension when your
husband dies, you may be able to use
his I contributions to increase your
basic tate Pension. If your husband
was entitled to any additional pension
or Graduated Retirement Benefit,
you may be entitled to some of it.
• If you’re a widow who is under tate
Pension age when your husband
dies, you may be entitled to a tate
Pension based on his contributions
